Founded on a radical idea: healthcare is a right
In 2003, Dr. Amara Osei — then a family physician at Vanderbilt — walked away from a comfortable practice to open a sliding-scale clinic in a leased strip mall space on Gallatin Avenue. She had watched too many patients delay care until emergencies because they couldn't afford a visit. She decided to change the calculation in one neighbourhood at a time.
Today, Eastside Community Health employs 14 full-time staff, operates across 8,000 sq ft, and serves over 3,200 patients annually. We hold FQHC designation, meaning federal funding supports our ability to offer care regardless of ability to pay.
